MOVING TIPS
-
Organize your packing by room. When you pack your items, consider the floor plan of your new home. Organize your items based on the rooms that they will be placed in.
-
Color code or label boxes. Make a carton identification log to show the number of boxes packed per room, and the total number of cartons packed
-
Do not pack too heavy in each box. Be sure that the bottoms of all cartons are secured and will hold the weight of the contents.
-
Make sure fragile items are adequately protected.
-
Start early (generally takes longer than you anticipate). Pack a couple of cartons a day, starting well ahead of the move.
-
Bend with your knees! Squat directly in front of the load, pull it in tight to you and lift it with your legs, not your back. Set it back down the same way. If you must turn while carrying the load, then turn your whole body with your legs, don't swivel yourself at the waist.
-
Take breaks often and don’t forget to drink water.
-
Pack all medicines and essentials in a separate box to take with you in your vehicle.
-
Remove all flammables.
-
Take a picture of your electronics before you pack them up. Taking a picture of the electronics prior to moving them will serve as an extremely helpful guide. It will help you install them appropriately when you arrive in your new home.
-
Call utilities 72 hours in advance for the new residence.
-
Pack a suitcase with clothes and toiletries you will need for the first few days in your new home.
-
Arrange for removal of attached or installed home accessories you own (satellite dish, TV antenna, ceiling fan, etc…).
